What is Joomla?

There are more than 253 million cars and trucks on U.S. roads today, a figure that seems even greater considering that most Americans would have no clue how to build or design such a complex machine. Despite this, we still rely upon them as our default mode of transportation. There's a similarity between Americans' reliance upon cars and trucks and Websites -- it's not important for each person to know what's under the hood of either one, as long as it works and gets a person from A to B.

But, unlike cars, Websites are relatively new to our society, having only been introduced in the last 25 years or so. Not only that, just like cars of the early 20th Century, there have been some huge design updates since the "Model T" of Websites was introduced. Today, there are thousands of ways to build a Website. So how does Anchored Web Solutions build Websites for its clients? This article will take you on a tour of our approach.

Anchored Web's standard Website is built upon Joomla! 3, which is a kind of software called a Content Management System. A CMS is a general term for Websites that are programmed to help us simplify and automate updates to the code, in many cases for the benefit of the Website visitor. In the 1990s, the first Websites built by our coders were much simpler: When we designed a "Web page," we literally typed code onto a single document on the computer, saved it as an "html" file, and uploaded it to a server. Whatever code we typed into that page would appear on screen when a visitor found that page on the Internet.

That worked just fine -- for about a decade. As millions of computers began to sign on and sites like eBay, Google, and Yahoo emerged, it became apparent that even smaller Websites needed to provide a better experience to users -- and that called for updating Websites daily to keep up with users who were becoming more and more discerning about what they were being presented with. As sites grew into thousands of pages, this became an obstacle, and so content management systems were born. You might have heard of other systems such as Wordpress or Drupal. These CMS systems provide article management, user access control, and management of templates or "look-and-feel" decisions for the Websites powered by them.

Joomla is one of the most popular and powerful of those systems available today. It emerged in around the year 2000 by a loose collection of developers from around the world and, with more 200,000 community users and contributors, it has gone on to win the Packt Publishing Open Source Content Management System Award in 2006, 2007, and 2011. Info-Tech Research showed that by that time, Joomla powered more than 1.5 million websites, including Citibank, eBay, General Electric and many more.

Where Joomla excels in its approach to functionality -- it is virtually limitless. From the start, Joomla was a system built around the ability to install extensions. Need a blogging site? No problem, Joomla is made for that. Want to offer a shopping cart? There are dozens of development teams working on a solution for that alone. From message boards to social networks and beyond, your Website can take any form you want -- all you need is an expert you can trust with your business objectives.
